President Obama Visits Detroit Diesel Corporation Headquarters
Recognizes the North American Commercial Vehicle Industry’s First Completely Integrated Powertrain Family to be Produced in One Facility
DETROIT – President Barack Obama visited Detroit Diesel Corporation to recognize that the company’s Detroit™ DT12™ automated manual transmission and the new Detroit DD15® proprietary asymmetric turbocharger will be produced at the Detroit brand manufacturing headquarters in Redford, Michigan.
The addition of the Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission and DD15 proprietary asymmetric turbo to the full line of Detroit brand engines and axles at the facility represents a capital investment of $120 million and will result in the addition of 115 direct jobs to UAW 163, these unions represent the Detroit brand axle and engine production workers.
“The UAW Local 163 offered operational and production flexibility that enabled the decision for the DT12 and new DD15 proprietary asymmetric turbocharger production to be placed at the Detroit brand headquarters in Redford, Michigan,” said Martin Daum, president and CEO, Daimler Trucks North America. “Additionally, the State of Michigan and Redford Township provided economic incentives, a manufacturing-friendly business environment, and a large talent pool of manufacturing workers and engineers further driving the decision.”
Detroit’s integrated powertrain – which includes Detroit Engines, Detroit Axles and the new Detroit DT12 Transmission – is part of Daimler Trucks’ Global Excellence Strategy to have uniform production standards and processes worldwide, resulting in the most efficient, highest quality and lowest cost of ownership products in the industry.

American Power Group Signs National Distributor and Master Marketing Agreement with WheelTime Network LLC
LYNNFIELD, MA – American Power Group Corporation announced that its subsidiary, American Power Group, Inc. (“APG”) has signed a National Distributor and Master Marketing Agreement with WheelTime Network LLC (“WheelTime”). Under the terms of the agreement, WheelTime Network LLC will endorse APG technology and engage its member companies in establishing a North American network to market and install APG’s Vehicular Turbocharged Natural Gas Systems. The APG system is a cost effective and non--‐invasive patented turbocharged natural gas dual fuel conversion technology for trucks, stationary generators and off--‐road mobile diesel engines. The APG system offers a 300--‐800 mile dual fuel range with no loss of power and torque and, depending on the route profile, delivers an average annual net fuel savings of 15%--‐30% over 100% diesel fuel. With no practical design limits for engine models or horsepower, the APG system is currently EPA--‐approved for 88 engine families and is expected to receive EPA approval for more than 200 additional engine families by the end of 2013. The APG system offers the flexibility to return the vehicle to 100% diesel operation at any time. At end--‐of--‐life or vehicular rotation, the APG system and natural gas tank can be easily removed and installed on another EPA approved engine.
The WheelTime Network is North America’s highest quality truck service network. Its 18 member companies provide installation and warranty support through nearly 200 service centers, 2,800 service bays, 3,000 factory--‐trained technicians and 30 training facilities located across the United States and Canada.

Brake Safety Week Finds Substantial Compliance Despite Increase in Overall Out-of-Service Rate for Brakes of Trucks and Buses for Second Year in Row
During Brake Safety Week, September 9-15, 2102, federal, state, provincial and local safety inspectors across North America conducted inspections that focus on brake systems. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) reports that one out of seven of 21,255 vehicles inspected were placed out-of-service due to brake issues during the latest enforcement mobilization. Brakes have been cited in 29.4% of commercial motor vehicle crashes as an associated factor.
Commercial vehicle inspectors participating in the recent Brake Safety Week, the annual enforcement and education campaign focused on regulatory compliance of truck and bus brake system maintenance, found at least one in seven vehicles chosen for inspection had brake-related out-of-service (OOS) violations, according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). These rates are comparable to recent years, but slightly higher for the second year in a row. Of the vehicles inspected September 9-15, the OOS rate for all brake-related violations was 15.3%. This is higher than in 2011, 2010 and 2009 (at 14.2%, 13.5%, and 15.1%, respectively), but lower than in 2008 and 2007 (18.4% and 17.8% respectively).

East® Improves Optional Integrated Stairway for Flatbed Trailers
RANDOLPH, Ohio - Securing a flatbed load often requires climbing up on - and down from - the deck of the trailer. That's not easy, and can even be potentially dangerous. To provide a simpler, easier and safer entrance to and exit from the flatbed deck, East Manufacturing first introduced an optional integrated stairway a few years ago. Now East has improved this option by adding a locking door enclosure that allows for additional lights and license plate mounting, while giving the rear end a more custom appearance.
"The East integrated stairway is a smart safety option for flatbed trailers," said Bill McKenzie, product manager for platform products. "When open, the deck lid locks securely in the upright position via double rods that slide into two specially designed receivers. The first of two handrails is located under the lid, providing a handy 45° vertical handhold that's above deck height. The second handrail is built next to the steps, which are made of pooch-punched aluminum for both drainage as well as a skid-resistant surface," noted McKenzie.
In the down position, the deck lid latches securely to prevent bouncing during transit. The deck lid is load bearing, so the trailer loses zero deck area because of the stairs. Now East has added a new door that can be locked and fitted with ID lights that comply with federal DOT requirements, as well as a lighted license plate mounting area. The integrated stairway is all aluminum, so no extra weight is added to the trailer.
Headquartered in Randolph, Ohio, East Manufacturing Corporation offers a full line of aluminum dump, platform and refuse trailers, straight trucks with dump bodies, and heavy duty trucking accessories. Ranked in the top 20 trailer manufacturers in the U.S., East has a network of over 70 trailer dealer locations and 350 accessories dealer locations nationwide.
