KIA Motors America Partners With B.R.A.K.E.S. Teen Pro-Active Driving Course To Provide Hands On Defensive Driving Instruction
IRVINE, Calif. – Kia Motors America (KMA) recently partnered with B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe) Teen Pro Active Driving Course to provide more than 150 teenagers ranging in ages 15 1/2 to 19 with advanced training to respond to real-world driving scenarios. B.R.A.K.E.S., with KMA’s support — which included a fleet of 2013 Kia Rios — provided the instruction at no cost in an effort to prevent injuries and save lives by educating teens and their parents about the importance of responsible driving habits.
“Kia’s partnership with B.R.A.K.E.S. is a reflection of the company’s commitment to give back to the communities in which we do business,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “Reinforcing the importance of responsible driving in the first few months of licensure is essential to reducing the number of teen motor vehicle crashes and making the roads safer for everyone.”
B.R.A.K.E.S., a 501 c3 charity based in Charlotte,N.C., has provided safe driving instruction courses for more than 8,000 students in theU.S. andCanada. The school offers nearly four hours of hands-on training and a very low student-instructor ratio to ensure personal attention. The curriculum includes an array of defensive driving techniques and raises awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. Parents participate in the courses alongside their teens to ensure safe driving techniques are reinforced following the session.

CUMMINS RECEIVES FIRST EPA CERTIFICATION FOR MEETING 2014 GREENHOUSE GAS AND FUEL-EFFICIENCY RULES
Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) announced that it has received certification for its ISX15 engine from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), meeting both the EPA 2013 regulations and the new greenhouse gas and fuel-efficiency rules that will take effect in 2014. Cummins 2014 greenhouse gas certification is the first engine certificate issued by the EPA.
Cummins ISX15, the top-selling engine in the heavy-duty truck market, will deliver higher levels of fuel efficiency and reliability in 2013. Efficiency improvements to the base engine include optimized combustion and reduced parasitic load through high-efficiency water, fuel and lube pump systems, and the ISX15 will achieve up to 2 percent fuel economy improvement over today’s product. Cummins ISX15 for 2013 uses the same proven base engine with the XPI fuel system, VGT™ Turbocharger, Cummins Aftertreatment System with Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, and fully integrated electronics.
“Cummins 2013 truck engines will deliver better fuel economy with no major hardware changes,” said Jeff Jones, Cummins Vice President – Sales and Market Communications. “This results in improved reliability due to stable architecture.
“The certification of the ISX15 demonstrates Cummins commitment to deliver products that exceed both environmental and customer requirements. We are confident that we’ll receive certification for our other on-highway engines well before the end of the year,” Jones continued.

First SCR-Based Clean Engine Technology Milestone Reached as Company Prepares for Customer Deliveries in December, Full Production in January
ESCOBEDO, NUEVO LEON, MEXICO — Navistar International Corporation (NYSE: NAV) announced that the first International® ProStar®+ Class 8 on-highway tractor equipped with the Cummins ISX15 and SCR-based Cummins Emission Solutions aftertreatment system rolled off the production line this week at the company’s Escobedo, Mexico plant.
“This is a great accomplishment for Navistar and an important milestone as we bring our first SCR-based Class 8 trucks to the marketplace,” said Troy Clarke, Navistar president and COO. “The entire launch team and hundreds of others working behind the scenes are committed to a high-quality launch and this achievement is another proof point in our progress.”

FMCSA Implements Improvements to its Safety Measurement System
WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has implemented 11 new improvements to its Safety Measurement System (SMS). The changes, developed over several months with feedback from the public and stakeholders throughout the industry, will enhance the agency’s ability to identify and take action against trucks and buses with safety and compliance concerns.
The SMS uses all available inspection and crash data to prioritize carriers for interventions. SMS quantifies on-road safety performance of carriers to identify the specific safety problems the carrier exhibits and to monitor whether performance is improving or worsening. SMS helps FMCSA more efficiently apply its resources and bring carriers and drivers into compliance with Federal safety regulations in order to prevent crashes and save lives.
"Safety is our number one priority,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “These improvements will enable us to more accurately identify unsafe truck and bus companies and intervene before tragedies occur.”
